As a pregnant mother, you are undoubtedly going to receive some information on cord blood banking.  There are many various organizations that are looking to offer you the ability to bank your baby’s cord blood.  This blood comes from your baby’s umbilical cord and placenta and is full of very rich stem cells.  These stem cells can be used in a variety of ways to treat many different diseases and conditions.  By banking these stem cells, your child can have a bit of extra project for later in life when a life threatening condition strikes.

Before you decide on whether or not cord blood banking is right for you, you should take some time to gather necessary information.  For example, you should know that the baby’s cord blood can be banked either privately or publicly.  The largest difference here is that if you bank privately you are unable to locate and use the baby’s cord blood for his own conditions as there are not names associated with donations.  These are free while private banking offers the protection for you only and costs a good amount of money.

One thing to take seriously in this decision is your child’s health.  Your baby’s cord blood is full of rich cells that can reproduce through transplantation and, if needed repair the child’s immune system or even more so cure the disease striking him.  While there are no guarantees to what success the transplants can have nor the need for them at any time in their life, blood banking like this can save not only your child’s life but also their siblings, their family members or if you plan to donate the cells to some stranger that needs them.  In any case, donating or banking your baby’s cord blood can save lives.  If you do not do this, the end result is that this precious resource will be discarded.
