You have received the information about cord blood banking and are interested in making it happen. So, what do you do? There are several steps that you should take as well as decisions to make. The first one is to decide if you will use a public donation facility in which your donation if free but you have no ability to use those specific cord blood donations or if you will have a private facility manage your baby’s cord blood for your specific use. Once you have made this decision, you will then need to find the right type of bank to have take the donation. There are many private cord blood banks around that can offer you the help that you need. But, you may want to do a bit of research before you select just one of them. In fact, it makes sense to do a lot of research. There are not accreditations that the cord blood bank can obtain to insure that their processing and procedures are what they should be to provide you with the most in depth, high quality and reliable service. Once you have the bank in mind, you can work with them to make the process happen. In most cases, your doctor will be the one to retrieve the cord blood, but in other cases it can be someone from the clinic. You should talk to your doctor as well as the clinic as soon as you make the decision. Doing this at 34 weeks or before is wise for the necessary arrangements to be made, but most can be taken care of quickly if needed as well. If you are donating your baby’s cord blood, you will want to insure there is a donation facility located near you and that they are capable of taking the donation. |
