One of the biggest problems with exercise is not only trying to find the time to do it, but also the motivation to get it done. If the thought of exercise doesn’t excite you, you probably haven’t found the right exercise regimen that suits your lifestyle or interests you.

So what can you do to make exercise work for you? The following are some tips that may help you achieve your goal of making exercise an everyday part of your pregnancy.

Commit yourself – You deserve the very best, so does your baby and your body. Only you can choose to exercise, no one can do it for you. You have to want it for yourself.

Set goals for yourself – If your long term goal is 30 minutes of exercise, don’t expect to dive right into a 30 minute exercise routine and be motivated. If you are starting from scratch take it slow and begin with 5 minutes of exercise. Every week add an extra 5 minutes to your routine until you reach your long term goal of 30 minutes. Taking it slow allows your body to adapt to exercise, and shows you that you can achieve your goals.

Break up your routine – You don’t have to follow a structured exercise routine. If you can’t take 20 or 30 minutes of your time, break up your exercise into 10 minute intervals throughout the day.

Balance your exercises – Don’t force yourself to do only one form of exercise. Mix it up. Try doing some stretches, going for a walk or swimming. By doing different exercises, you’re less likely to become bored.

Make exercise mandatory – It’s easy to tell yourself you’re going to exercise tomorrow, but once tomorrow comes and you look at your day planner, it’s easy to forget about exercising and just go on with the rest of your day. Thus, you need to make exercise as mandatory as the items on your list of things to do. Make exercising a part of your list in your day planner and highlight it, so you won't forget.

Don't be too hard on yourself – If something unexpected comes up in the day and you are unable to exercise don’t be hard on yourself. Exercise when the next best opportunity presents itself.

Be realistic – you should never push yourself beyond the limit your body can take. Listen to what your body is telling you. If you feel tired, don’t force yourself to exercise, just get some rest instead. The same applies when you are sick. If you have the flu or a cold, don’t even think about exercising. Let your body fully recuperate. Once you are feeling more like yourself, slowly get back into your regular routine.

Be spontaneous – If you have any free time on your hands, put it to good use and exercise. There is no law that says you have to follow a rigid exercise routine. So, why not make the most of a beautiful day?

Exercise with a Friend – Sometimes when you have someone to exercise with, it doesn’t feel like a chore. If you don't have a friend you can walk with, find out if there are any groups in your area who regularly cycle, hike or walk in malls.

Sign up for a prenatal exercise class – Many pregnant women enjoy going to prenatal exercise classes. There are many exercises offered such as aerobics, swimming and yoga. At a prenatal exercise class you can meet other pregnant women, and learn fun exercises from a qualified instructor. You never know, it could be something you’ll look forward to.
