A large percentage of pregnant woman suffer from back pain at one point or another throughout their pregnancy. Most back pain during pregnancy is caused by hormonal changes, extra weight, and changes in posture (you might find that as your center of gravity changes, you find yourself trying to "adjust" your posture).

What can you do about it?

Try the following suggestions for back pain relief:

1. Sit with your feet elevated, and don't cross your legs!

2. Practice a healthy posture.

3. Sleep on your side. Try placing a pillow between your knees or sleep with a body pillow.

4. Take acetaminophen for the pain (it's safe for baby).

5. Try applying heat or cold to the area that is painful. And get your partner to give you a massage! You deserve it!

6. Keep exercising. It's important that you keep exercising and stretching. Low impact exercises like walking and swimming are the best.

7. Consider wearing a maternity support belt to give your back added support.

8. Wear flat, supportive shoes.

9. When driving, try adding a small pillow for your lower back.

10. Avoid lifting heavy items or children, and when lifting, bend with your knees, not with your back.

If your back pain becomes constant or severe, make sure to talk about it with your doctor.
